Death penalty sought

October 25, 2011

The District 25 Attorney's Office says it will seek the death penalty for two men charged with murdering a cab driver earlier this year.

A state prosecutor announced in court on Monday that his office will proceed and seek a capital charge against Camyron Johnson, 23, and Matthew Hopkins, 22.

Both men are charged with murdering Adam Williams, 32, who was killed while on duty working for Yellow Cab Company in August.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 23, Williams picked up one rider outside LongHorn Steakhouse headed for Tate Boulevard and 15th Street NE in Hickory. The rider wanted to change his destination to Hildebran, and Williams called it in. That was last communication Yellow Cab heard from Williams.

At 10:35 p.m., employees of LongHorn called 9-1-1 after Williams tried to enter the restaurant bleeding from wounds to the neck and face area.

Williams was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Authorities later arrested Johnson, Hopkins and three other suspects on charges related to the murder.

The state is only seeking the death penalty for Johnson and Hopkins, who are charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and murder.

State prosecutors said they are seeking the death penalty for aggravating circumstances that fit the crime, including that is was committed while the defendant was engaged in a homicide or robbery, that the crime was committed for pecuniary gain and that it was a felony that was especially heinous, atrocious and cruel.
