Deadline is Tuesday for Newton's Unity Day award nominations

The City of Newton Human Relations Council is currently accepting nominations for the City’s annual Unity Day Award. The nomination deadline for this prestigious award is Tuesday, April 12. The award will be formally presented at the City’s Unity Day Celebration on Saturday, April 30 at Southside Park. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The nominee should be an individual, business, or industry that has demonstrated outstanding service to the Newton community and that has worked to improve relations among cultures and races in the City.

Nominations will be judged by members of the Human Relations Council, and should be submitted to: City of Newton, c/o Public Information Office, P.O. Box 550, Newton, NC 28658.

Past recipients of the Unity Day Award include: The Reverend Fred Thompson, 1996; the late Johnny Gabriel, 1997; Grace Gaither, 1998; the late Phairlever Pearson, 1999; Beth Bock and the late Clarence “Moe” Fox, 2000; Mayor Robert A. Mullinax, 2005; Hannah Scott, 2006; Dr. Benjamin Wofford, 2007; Pastor Dan Martin, 2008; The Corner Table, 2009; and Stanford Gabriel, 2010. No celebration was held from 2001-2004.

The Human Relations Council is currently finalizing plans for the Unity Day Celebration, which will include a wide variety of entertainment, food vendors, cultural displays, children’s activities and games, and more.

... this waste of money comes at he 150th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter, for those of you who went to public school, that started the Civil War!

... no Taxpayer supplied dollars were used for this "undertaking". But I know there were. The odd thing is, this "Unity" malarky is more devisive than it helps. GUESS WHAT, WE ARE UNIFIED AND HAVE BEEN UNDER EDICT OF TEH SUPREME COURT FOR NEARLY 60 YEARS! There is no reason for this, in the end it brings disunity. NO ONE WHO WAS IN ANY POLITICAL POWER IN THEDAYS BEFORE DESEGREGATION IS ALIVE TO PUNISH. Blacks have all the same opportunities and capabilities, why do we persist in continuing this emotional blackmail perpetuated on us by those who cant get over the 1960s! It is an INSULT to me and those responsible who orgaize such drivel should be voted out of office!
