DAY 1 UPDATE: NCHSAA wrestling tournament

February 24, 2012

Nine 2A wrestlers and seven 3A wrestlers are still alive for a chance at NCHSAA individual state wrestling titles after the first day of competition in Greensboro.

Newton-Conover remains in the best shape for a potential state championship. All five Red Devils who qualified for states, including Ian Canrobert (106), Franklin Wepner (126), Eric Holbrook (145), Addison Klutz (152) and Tyler Benfield (195), all advanced to the second round.

The Red Devils have the most points of any 2A school with 16, which ties them for fourth place with TW Andrews. They trail 2A leader North Surry by eight points.

Maiden, who advanced Richard Kerekes and Evan Spears to round two, are tied for 13th with eight points. Bandys is a half point behind in 20th.

Bunker Hill, who saw both its wrestlers — Logan Quiney and Cody Dobbins — fall to consolations, have not scored a point yet and are in 51st place.

Northwestern 3A/4A schools Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens are tied for eighth heading into the second day of competition. Both teams accrued 10 points.

The defending state champion Tigers earned a fall victory by Hayden Albert (160) and decisions by Ben Pitts (132), Jeremy Fredell (145) and Zack Edwards (195).

Three Tigers — Caleb Griffin (120), Trevor Cook (152) and Nick Rotenberry (220) all fell and move to the consolation round.
