December 27, 2010

After a one-day delay because of snow in the area, the Catawba Valley Classic will begin today at Hickory High School and Catawba Valley Community College.

Despite the move, start times for games will remain the same. Action in the girl's tournament starts at 4 p.m. at Hickory High School when No. 4 Fred T. Foard (5-3) takes on No. 5 Alexander Central (4-4).

That will be followed by No. 2 Hickory (8-1) versus No. 7 Bunker Hill (2-7) at 5:30 p.m. The third game of the night takes place at 7 p.m. and will pit No. 1 S. Caldwell (9-0) against No. 8 St. Stephens (0-9). No. 3 Newton-Conover (5-1) and No. 6 Maiden (2-6) round out the night's action at 8:30 p.m.

The boy's tournament will be played at Catawba Valley Community College starting at 4:30 p.m. with No. 1 St. Stephens (8-1) against No. 8 S. Caldwell (0-8).

No. 3 Alexander Central (4-4) takes on No. 6 Maiden (3-5) at 6 p.m. No. 4 Bunker Hill (5-4) and No. 5 Newton-Conover (3-3) play at 7:30 p.m. Defending-tournament champion and second-seeded Hickory (7-1) closes out the night against No. 7 Fred T. Foard (2-6) at 9 p.m.

Games in the second round will be played at the same locations Wednesday. Girl's games start at 4 p.m. at Hickory High School, and boy's games start at 4:30 p.m. at CVCC.

Thursday's action will conclude the tournament and starts with the girl's fifth-place game at 1 p.m. That is followed by the boy's fifth-place game at 2:30 p.m., the girl's third-place game at 4 p.m. and the boy's third-place game at 5:30 p.m.

The girl's championship will take place at 7 p.m., and the boy's championship will be at 8:30 p.m. All of these games will be played at CVCC.
