Crisis to dream: A 10-year journey

Laban Helderman had what he calls a mid-life crisis 10 years ago.

That crisis involved him leaving Duke Energy after 29 years and opening Buffalo Shoals IGA Supermarket and Hardware.

“As a boy I always wanted a hardware store,” Helderman said.

His dream was realized on Sept. 3, 2003, when his 26,000 sq. ft. grocery, hardware and convenience store opened to the public in southeastern Catawba County.
