Creamed corn

June 21, 2012

N.C. 10 was closed for several hours Thursday morning when a tractor-trailer truck overturned and spilled about 20 tons of corn along the roadway west of Catawba's town limits.

"We heard it. Boom, boom, boom, boom," said Donna Matthews who was asleep in her home near where the truck overturned. "I was half asleep and thought it was a storm, but as soon as my feet hit the floor, I knew it was a wreck."

N.C. Trooper K.E. Travis said Richard Ellis, 59, was driving east on N.C. 10 about 7:20 a.m. Thursday when he entered a curve in the highway, ran off the right side of the road and lost control. The truck and trailer overturned, destroying the trailer and sending a tidal wave of corn kernels into the road and surrounding land for hundreds of yards.
