Crawdads rally falls short in ninth, 4-3

May 5, 2012

Despite two RBIs in the top of the ninth inning, the Hickory Crawdads dropped their third-straight road game to the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Friday, 4-3.

The Grasshoppers (19-8) took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind a three-run homer to center field by Matt Smith that plated Ryan McIntyre and Austin Barnes.

Greensboro added again to its lead in the bottom of the second inning with a sacrifice fly from Brent Keys that once again plated McIntyre.

Hickory (16-11) sliced into the lead with a solo home run by Jordan Akins in the top of the fourth inning.

The Crawdads wouldn't score again until the ninth inning. After Akins reached on a single, third baseman Drew Robinson doubled to bring Akins home and cut the lead to two runs.

Jeremy Williams singled in the next-at bat, scoring Robinson from second.

However, the 'Hoppers got a strike out and a key double play in the next two at-bats to seal the victory.

The Crawdads start the first of a four-game road series with the Savannah Sand Gnats (17-11) in Georgia on Saturday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
