County to talk marriage amendment

April 13, 2012

Catawba County commissioners will discuss adopting a resolution Monday that will support the state’s proposed marriage amendment.

The constitutional amendment, which goes to a public vote May 8, reads, “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.”

The discussion of the resolution is a formal agenda item on Monday and is brought before the county by Betty Cotton, a Hickory resident and co-chair for Catawba County voteformarriagenc.com.

Catawba County commissioners are scheduled to discuss the amendment Monday at 7 p.m. during their regularly scheduled meeting at the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.
