County drafting legislative agenda

March 29, 2012

Catawba County commissioners are expected to approve a list of legislative goals Monday they hope will restore funding, eliminate unfunded mandates and provide more flexibility to county and municipal agencies.

The legislative goals are part of a state and federal legislative agenda that commissioners approve each year. The county’s goals for the next fiscal year and upcoming summer sessions address a variety of issues aiming to keep taxes low and divert additional costs from the county and its municipalities.

“There are 21 items. It’s easy if you think about it in terms of a three-legged stool. Each one of those items fit into those three areas — restore funding that we’ve lost, we don’t want any unfunded mandates, and we’d like flexibility,” said Assistant County Manager Dewey Harris.
