Constitution Day celebrations

Constitution Week wraps up with area events.

Constitution Day activities in Catawba County include the following:

The League of Women Voters will host a Constitution Day celebration from noon to 1:45 p.m. Friday at the 1924 Courthouse, 30 N. College Ave. in Newton. Hickory High School will present the colors. Newton Mayor Robert Mullinax will give the proclamation. Guest speakers include L. Suzanne (San) Owsley, District Court Judge from the 25th Judicial District of NC; Robert A. Mullinax Jr., District Court Judge from 25th Judicial District of NC; Dr. Lillie Cox, superintendent for Hickory City Schools; Lynette Scott, of Cognitive Connection in Hickory; Darryl Miller, The Unifour One Stop Collaborative; and Ray Robinson, of Democracy N.C.

Mt. View Elementary School
The school will host a Constitution Day program at 8:30 a.m. Friday in the school gym. This 30-minute program will feature the writing of the Constitution enacted by students, the Preamble and its meaning, patriotic songs and PowerPoint illustrations. 

Claremont Elementary School 
Claremont Elementary School will sponsor a Constitution Day celebration Friday at 8:30 a.m. in the school multi-purpose room. Shari Wright, music instructor at Claremont Elementary, will lead the program.

Fred T. Foard High School 
Fred T. Foard students will receive about the Constitution Friday in an extended homeroom.

St. Stephens High School
St. Stephens High School's NJROTC cadets and students will recite the Preamble continuously from 7:30-8 a.m. Friday from a podium in front of the school flags. Also, as parents drop off students Friday, cadets will randomly pass out pocket Constitutions, as well as mini U.S. flags.
