Congressman discuss regulations

February 25, 2011

If one thing is certain, it's uncertainty, according to several area business leaders and Catawba County's congressman.

Rep. Patrick McHenry met with about two dozen business leaders and officials Friday at the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce to discuss how government regulations block private-sector growth.

"Free enterprise has been under attack, and that's unacceptable," said Chamber of Commerce president Danny Hearn. " ... This chamber is not going to sit back and let that happen."

Officials agreed that one of the biggest problems facing the private sector is the uncertainty of future legislation and the regulations that could come in light of that legislation.

McHenry said businesses are afraid of what the government's next actions will do to them. He took special care to note that it's what regulations do to people, and not what they do for people.

McHenry wanted to hold the roundtable discussion session with leaders from banking to communications industries, so he could receive valuable feedback from his constituents about business and job creation in Catawba County.

"The idea is to get feedback on regulations that are affecting you," McHenry told company and industry leaders during Friday's session, which was broadcast live online via

The group's discussion focused on varying government regulations and how those regulations are affecting businesses. Leaders asked McHenry questions, and he addressed the leaders and their concerns.

If this same crowd had met to discuss business, it would have involved white sheets and moonshine.

I bet there wasn't one African American and maybe one female present at this meeting. Our Chamber of Commerce led by our red-cheeked Danny (might have been some shine consumed) and local community leaders equals the power elite of Catawba County who know good and well that there isn't governmental rules holding them back. Our rich folks who are in charge made a lot of money in the Clinton years but they would never ever admit that.

As for "Ramrod" McHenry; if you ever see his favorite deceased movie actor you will understand his nickname, why would he care about this meeting seeing as there were no television cameras present.

Is it me, or does Paddy look like the lead Munchkin of the Lolly Pop Guild?

How can he stand up to the Socialist when you cant even see him if you are over six feet tall?!

Oh well, most liberals and democrats wear "sensible shoes" anyway and are shorter to the ground (makes 'em closer to mother earth!).
