Commissioners give Catawba $7,000

August 17, 2010

Catawba Fire Department will receive $7,000 in appropriated matching funds from the county.
The funds will be used to pay for a thermal imaging camera, a four-gas monitor and a ventilation saw through a matching grant from the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s Volunteer Fire Department Fund grant program.
“We’re going to give them the full $7,000, because that is what was agreed upon,” said County Manager Tom Lundy.
Catawba Fire Department is funded jointly by the town of Catawba and the Catawba County rural fire district. The county contracts with Catawba Fire Department for service in the county’s rural fire districts.
Therefore, County Commissioners entertained at its Monday meeting the possibility of funding half the required matching funds, or $3,500, because the department is also funded by the town.
“I wouldn’t want them to lose their grant because of this,” said Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Kitty Barnes, citing the town of Catawba’s recent budget issues. “Most of our other fire departments have this equipment available.”
