A closer look at the 2013 prep boys soccer season

Below is a look at each of the seven Catawba County high schools and their prep boys soccer teams for the 2013 season:

Bandys

Head coach: Mark Simmons

Last season: 6-14, lost in first round of playoffs

Returning players: Hunter Yancey, Armando Rivera, Connor Borst, Juan Olmos, Morrissey Muniz, J. Will Edwards, Spencer Tullos, Alec Crowe, Kyle Enyeart, Zach Beresford, Emilio Torres and Heptzel Santos.

New contributors: Travis Kiser and Scott Bivens.

A quote about the team heading into the season: “Our soccer conference is one of the toughest 2A conferences in the state. There are no easy games, no nights off. Our goal is to be competitive and play hard in every game.”

Bunker Hill

Head coach: Robert Meuser

Last season: 10-9-1, lost in second round of playoffs

Returning players: Omar Chavez, Richard Xiong, Javier Chavez, Hunter Frazier and Feng Yang.

New contributors: Cody Farrant, Jorge Jimenez and Alex Aviles.

Last season: 16-8-1, lost in third round of playoffs

Last season: 26-2, 3A state runners-up

Head coach: Neil Everett

Last season: 1-16, did not qualify for playoffs

Returning players: Kevin Aragon, Jimmy Vang, Zack Lickfelt, Jonathan Thomas, Alex Lee, Dao Thao, Christian Medina Garcia and James Morton.

A quote about the team heading into season: “As we are returning the whole team from last year with the addition of a few new guys, who I believe will greatly help us where we needed help the most, I feel this year we have the experience and maturity to really be successful.”

Newton-Conover

Head coach: Angelo Palozzi

Last season: 16-7-1, lost to South Iredell in final four

Returning players: Nine, including CVAC Player of the Year Franklin Wepner.

New contributors: Alex Tenjay and Alan Espirillia.

A quote about the team heading into season: “We are very excited about this years team and being in a new conference. We have six returning starters from last year’s starting 11. We have a very hard out-of-conference schedule with team the likes of Asheville Christian Academy, Shelby, Owen, Lake Norman Charter, Hickory, Fred T. Foard and Ashe County that will get us ready for the new conference and playoffs.”

Head coach: Cory Morgan

Last season: 14-7-2, lost to Freedom in third round of playoffs

Returning players: Andrew Barton, Nich Bryant, Luke Bruce, Tommy Vo and Osvaldo Cruz.
