July 2, 2012

Clerks at two Catawba County convenience stores were among 243 statewide cited for selling tobacco products to minors.

During fiscal year 2011-2012, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agents conducted 1,870 unannounced tobacco compliance checks in 90 counties across the state and cited 243 store clerks for selling tobacco or tobacco products to a minor.

Among those checks, two in Catawba County resulted in citations. In March a citation was issued to a clerk at the Sonoco at 821 U.S. 321 NW in Hickory. Another citation was issued in April for a clerk who sold tobacco to a minor at the Lowes Foods Fuel on Second Street NE in Hickory, according to information provided by ALE.
