City crafting plans for 'Southwest Area'

Since 2002, Newton has crafted and adopted three land development plans for various portions of the city, and a plan for the city's core area was introduced Tuesday.
Now, Newton planners are turning their attention to the Startown area, where a public drop-in workshop will kick-off efforts to create a plan that will shape development in that area during the next 10 to 15 years.
A drop-in workshop for the "Southwest Area Plan" will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Ganntt Community Room in the basement of Newton City Hall.
The Southwest Area Plan will focus on property inside Newton city limits and the city's extra-territorial planning area, that is easts of Startown Road. between N.C. 10 and Old Conover-Startown Road.. The area also includes land between McKay Road and Southwest Boulevard.
Owners of property affected by the Southwest Area Plan have been mailed postcards notifying them of Thursday's workshop.
"This is an opportunity for people to come in and look at the findings the planning commission made about the area," said Newton Planning Director Glenn Pattishall. "We are really trying to get input and comments from property owners and citizens about what they would like to see and not see."
