Back-to-back state championships.

Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe closed out a second straight doubles title on Saturday, defeating Shelby’s Ray Webb Parker and Ben Cheaney 6-3, 7-5.
The title is the second straight for Choi, who won last year with Will Huggins last season.

Lampe was also in last year’s final, but fell with partner Dillon Cervantez to the team of Choi-Huggins.

“Our goal going into the state tournament was making it an all N-C final again like last year, and we were three points away from doing that, but fell just a bit short,” said N-C coach Brian Tate. “Hang and Ryan were the favorites to win this all year long, so we are all pleased that they could get this done.”

The back-to-back titles are the first in the program’s history.
The Red Devils were attempting to repeat with two teams in the finals again, but were unsuccessful.

The other doubles team of Austin Adams and John Tate lost to Parker and Cheaney in a thrilling three-set match, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the finals.

Newton-Conover also had a shot of winning a singles title, but John Reid was eliminated in the second round of competition.

Newton-Conover continues its quest for a dual team championship in 2A on Tuesday. They travel to Wilkes Central for a match starting at 4 p.m.

“I don’t think either Hang or Ryan would say that they played their best tennis this weekend, so that speaks a lot of just how strong they are when they do get rolling,” coach Tate said. “I’m hoping they are saving that for this week because that back-to-back team championship has been the big prize we have been eye balling all year.”
