Checkpoint nets 59 charges

Newton along with the Hickory and Conover police departments and N.C. Highway Patrol wrote a combined 59 tickets and made several arrests during a weekend checkpoint.

The group of 17 officers conducted the checkpoint Saturday, June 15 at 11 p.m. that lasted until 2 a.m Sunday. The checkpoint was located on U.S. 70 near the Hickory American Legion Fair Grounds.

The officers were supported by a city of Newton Public Works crew who provided cones and traffic signs for the checkpoint. City work crews used a multitude of orange safety cones to reduce the four-lane divided highway into one lane heading each direction.
