Police arrested a Maiden man Friday that is accused of choking and strangling a 73-year-old Newton woman before stealing multiple firearms from her home.

With help from the Maiden Police Department, Newton Police arrested and charged Austin Sinclair Anthony, 22, of Maiden, with attempted murder, kidnapping and larceny charges Friday after he and two other suspects choked and strangled an elderly woman Tuesday.

Anthony is charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, common law robbery, felony breaking and entering, assault by strangulation, two counts of larceny of a firearm, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and larceny after breaking and entering. He is being held in Catawba County Jail without bond.

As of press time Friday, police were still searching for Austin Chislom, 17, of Newton, who is also charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, two counts of larceny of a firearm, larceny after breaking and entering, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and common law robbery.

Newton Police Chief Don Brown said they have also taken a juvenile into custody that was involved with the incident.

Authorities said Anthony, Chislom and a juvenile female suspect entered a Newton woman’s apartment at about 7:10 p.m. Tuesday and strangled and choked the 73-year-old woman before stealing two firearms from the residence.

Brown said the juvenile female first entered the apartment at 730 S. Cline Ave. to let Anthony and Chislom inside. Brown said one of the suspects then grabbed the victim around the neck from behind, dragging her to the floor and strangling her to unconsciousness.

The woman called police when she regained consciousness, but the suspects already left the scene by the time officers arrived, Brown said. The elderly female was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

Brown said the strangled woman was familiar with all of the suspects, adding that Chislom lived in the same apartment complex as the victim.

“We picked up the juvenile female (Thursday night), and she had a hearing (Friday) morning,” Brown said.

Any information on the whereabouts of Chislom should be relayed to the Newton Police Department at (828) 465-7430.
