Catawba County Schools Board of Education made joyous, yet sad, announcements Monday as it welcomed new board members, but released two members.
After 18 years on the Board of Education, member Betty Blackburn resigned.
"I am saying 'bye' to a very good friend," said CCS interim superintendent Glenn Barger. "(Blackburn) has spent her life in public education and has served this system very well — first as a teacher and the last 18 years of service on the board of education."
Barger presented Blackburn with a plaque showing the board's appreciation for her service. Blackburn joked about Barger presenting her a plaque for the second time. The first was when she retired as a Catawba County Schools teacher.
"It's been a real joy serving Catawba County Schools," Blackburn said. "It's been a great trip."
Board members expressed their gratitude to Blackburn for her leadership on the school board.
"You have been very patient with me," said board member Sherry Butler. "You had patience and time to teach me when I needed to learn and patience to hear me when I've had ideas."
Board chairwoman Joyce Spencer commended Blackburn for lives she's touched during her educational years.
"Your service is highly noted," Spencer said. "There are many, many students' lives you may have impacted."
Carolyn Jones Connor, who served four years on the board, was also recognized. Connor was absent from Monday's meeting, but she will receive a plaque from the school board as well.
To swear in new board members, Glenn Fulbright and David Brittain, was Judge Suzanne Owsley. Also, board members Charlie Wyant and Butler were re-elected and sworn in Monday for another term.
The board also voted to keep Spencer as its chairwoman. Wyant was voted as vice chairman on a 6-1 vote, with Butler opposing.
