Catawba recalls Gettysburg

This week as the nation this week observes the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg, Catawbans remember local soldiers who fought in the Confederate army in that historic Civil War confrontation.

It is difficult to determine how many Catawba men were in Pennsylvania the first three days in July 1863 or how many died, were wounded or taken prisoner. More than 1,500 local men were in the southern ranks during the war, and many were in the military companies involved in the July 1-3, 1863, combat.
