This Dollar goes a long way.
A new Dollar General will open in Catawba this week, giving town residents quick and easy access to basic grocery store needs. There is no grocery store in Catawba, and many residents have to drive outside town lines currently to get food or a general item quickly.
The store is located at the intersection of U.S. 70 and Oxford School Road.
“It just provides quick and easy access for residents,” said Catawba Town Manager Brian Barnett. “Most of the residents are coming or going from the interstate, so they are crossing where the store is daily. It gives them a quick stop on the way home or way out.”
Catawba has a convenience store in town already, but nothing to the scale of the Dollar General, Barnett said.
Workers are finishing up work on the interior of the building, but it should open Thursday or Friday of this week, said Sharon Watson, store manager.
In addition to most health, beauty and other retail needs, the store offers a few perishables including milk, breads and a few meats.
“You name it, and we’ve probably got it,” Watson said.
The Dollar General is the first of two new businesses opening in Catawba this fall.
Cindys Starlite Café 2, a “mom and pop” style pig-out, operates one location in Taylorsville and will open its second restaurant across from the police station in Catawba. Restaurant owners Cindy and Wayne Cothran bought the property in an auction two months ago, and Wayne said they are currently renovating the space.
“A lot of people have come from Catawba to Taylorsville with an interest in our food, and we are trying to make it easier for them,” Wayne said recently. “We are looking to sort of make Catawba a home away from home.”
The new restaurant will seat about 80 to 100 people, and Wayne said Cindys features everything from burgers to country cooking. He said without looking that there are more than 200 items on the menu, including homemade desserts and ice cream.
Cindys Starlite Café 2 will take applications for employment in the mornings at its Taylorsville location until the new restaurant opens, Wayne said.
Catawba Mayor Vance Readling said he’s happy to see development in the town.
“It gives us some outlet,” Readling said. “A lot of times you need to pick up a card or gift or something real quick. It gives us access to something we didn’t have, and we are looking forward to it.”
Because the Dollar General is outside of town limits, it will not produce revenue for Catawba through property tax, but it will add to the town’s sales tax base.
