It's a new year in Catawba County, and the first week of 2012 offers events for all ages.
Community happenings this week include a teen game night, yoga and Tai Chi classes for seniors, a diabetes support workshop for all ages, a blood drive and a chance to view parts of the solar system.

Tuesday
Conover Library will offer a Teen Game Night at 6:30 p.m. at Conover Station.
Pizza and books will be available as friends are encouraged to meet.
Tuesday/Thursday
The Catawba County Library System will help residents learn to use e-reader devices during a series of classes in Conover and Claremont.
Classes are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Conover library branch and 6 p.m. Thursday at the Claremont branch.
Thursday
The Newton Parks & Recreation Department and the Catawba County Council on Aging will offer “Yoga for Seniors” every Thursday morning in January for a suggested donation of $3 per class to those ages 55 and older.
Classes will be at the Newton Recreation Center from 10-11 a.m.
Thursday
"Take Charge of Your Diabetes," an education and support workshop for people with type 2 diabetes, will meet Thursday at the Agricultural Resources Center in Newton.
Patti Moore, a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian, will talk about carbohydrate counting.
Call the Cooperative Extension office at 828-465-8243 to reserve a seat.
Friday
The 23rd Annual Masonic Blood Drive will be at Conover Fire Department and Hickory Masonic Lodge from 2-7 p.m.
Friday
The Lucille Miller Observatory on the campus of Maiden Middle School will open for its monthly public observing time at 7 p.m. Friday.
All ages are welcome, and no reservations are needed. Weather permitting, those who attend will observe the moon, Venus, Jupiter and the winter sky.
