Catawba County's week ahead

Many local organizations take a break this week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so the schedule of events in Catawba County is light.
However, there are opportunities to see all seven county high schools in action on the basketball court, as well as a Kwanzaa celebration and a New Year's Eve bash in Hickory.
Monday
Ridgeview Library in Hickory will offer a Kwanzaa celebration at 6 p.m. in the Ridgeview Recreational Center.
Featured entertainment will be Obakunle Akinlana of Charlotte, a professional storyteller, musician, lecturer, published writer and percussionist who has performed throughout the United States and West Africa. The program will consist of African folktales, drumming and dancing with audience participation, and lighting of the Kwanzaa Kinara.
Refreshments will be served.
Tuesday-Thursday
The 25th annual Catawba Valley Classic kicks off Tuesday with games at Hickory High School and Catawba Valley Community College. Boys games begin at 4:30 p.m. at Hickory High. Girls games begin at 4 p.m. at CVCC.
Thursday-Friday
The Peoples Bank Holiday Classic begins at Bandys High School at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Bandys is hosting the event for the first time. Championship games will be Friday.
Saturday
The Hickory Jaycees will hold their 15th annual New Year's Eve Bash from 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in Hickory.
Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.
