Events slow down in the Hickory Metro this week as Christmas approaches, but many churches are holding special holiday services.
Newton-Conover High School will also offer a free lunch for the needy on Thursday.

The Catawba County League of Republican Women will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday at Catawba Country Club.Â A luncheon buffet opens at 11:30 a.m.; program starts at noon.
All interested Republican women are invited to attend and are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to benefit the Cooperative Christian Ministry of Hickory. The club meets monthly every on the third Tuesday of each month.
Newton-Conover High School will sponsor a lunch for the needy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the school. For more information, call 828-465-0920.
Saturday Christmas services
* Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover will host a live nativity at the church's Family Life Center at 4 p.m.
*Augustana Lutheran Church in Hickory will have a free Christmas Eve breakfast from 7-10 a.m. The menu will be eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, pancakes biscuits, toast, gravy coffee, milk and orange juice.
*Beth Eden Lutheran Church will have a family Christmas Eve service and live nativity at 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be a Christmas Eve candlelight and communion service at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
*Bethlehem United Methodist Church will have a Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. Saturday.
*Catawba United Methodist Church will have a service of carols and communion Saturday at 6 p.m.
*Mt. Olive Lutheran Church will have a Christmas Eve communion service at 7 p.m. Saturday and a Christmas Day communion service at 10 a.m. Sunday.
*St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Claremont will have Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday. On Christmas Day, a service will be at 10:30 a.m.
