Catawba County's week ahead

Catawba County high school graduates and their families celebrate with commencement ceremonies this week.

Bandys High School kicks off a string of graduation ceremonies with its gathering Thursday at Catawba Valley Community College.

Sunday
An auto and bike show at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds raises money to help a 6-year-old girl's family pay her medical bills. Zoe Hildebran, of Valdese, needs chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant.

Gates open for show participants at 11 a.m. and the public at noon.

Car clubs are welcome to participate, and registration is $15 per vehicle. Plaques will be awarded to vehicles for best-in-show.

The event also includes a cake walk, raffle, face-painting and inflatable rides.

Tuesday
All of Catawba County's Eagle Scouts are invited to gather at 6:30 p.m. at the Catawba Science Center Aquarium & Planetarium on the SALT Block in Hickory. Local Scout officials are trying to determine how many Eagle Scouts are in Catawba County by assembling them on the Centennial Anniversary of the Eagle Scout Award.

Wednesdays
Newton Martial Arts hosts a women's self-defense class from 7-8 p.m. Cost is $3 per class. Only ages 13 and older allowed to participate. No child care available. For more information, call certified martial arts instructor Cher Lineberger at 312-6470.

Bandys High School graduation begins at 7 p.m. at CVCC Tarlton Complex.

Friday
Maiden High School graduation begins at 7 p.m. at CVCC Tarlton Complex.

Friday
Newton-Conover High School graduation begins at 8 p.m. at Gurley Stadium on the school's Newton campus.

Friday
Hickory High School graduation begins at 8 p.m. at Frank Barger Stadium on the school's campus.

Saturday
Fred T. Foard High School graduation begins at 10 a.m. at CVCC Tarlton Complex.

Saturday
Bunker Hill High School graduation begins at 2 p.m. at CVCC Tarlton Complex.

Saturday
St. Stephens High School graduation begins at 7 p.m. at CVCC Tarlton Complex.
