Catawba County's week ahead

From beginning to end, this promises to be a busy week in Catawba County.

The week begins with an expected superintendent announcement Monday and continues with primary election voting Tuesday.

Among other events, the week ends Saturday with Newton's annual MayFEST celebration.

Monday
Catawba County Schools is expected to announce its next superintendent at a school board meeting at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting is at the CCS office on Anderson Avenue in Newton.

Tuesday
Catawba County voting precincts open at 6:30 a.m. for the 2012 primary election. Polls remain open until 7:30 p.m.

No one may register and vote at any precinct Tuesday. The deadline passed for registered to vote in this primary.

Following the election, results will display in the second floor meeting room in the Catawba County Government Center in Newton.

Tuesday
The Capt. Charles F. Connor Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 840 will commemorate Confederate Memorial Day with a service at 7 p.m. at the Confederate Memorial outside the 1924 Courthouse in Newton.

The program includes a wreath-laying ceremony and a featured speaker.

The community is invited to attend.

Wednesday-Thursday
Bunker Hill High School's Masquerader group will perform "Grease" at the Newton-Conover Auditorium at 7 p.m. both nights.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students, and they may be purchased by calling 828-241-3355.

Thursday
A memorial service will honor fallen law enforcement officers at 1 p.m. at Catawba Memorial Park on U.S. 70 in Hickory.

Saturday-Sunday
The 2012 Parade of Homes is scheduled for the Greater Hickory Metro. Visit www.hickoryhbaparade.com or call the Home Builders Association at 828-322-6482.

Saturday
Montessori at Sandy Ford hosts an open house from 3-6 p.m. at the school on Sandy Ford Road. For more information, visit montessoriatsandyford.org or call 828-294-7478.

The 2012 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Newton MayFEST is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown Newton.

Saturday
Catawba Women's Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a party for the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event will feature food, games, prizes, Mother's Day gifts, chair massages, kids' inflatable activities and the Little Bloo Chew train. The event will be at 1501 Tate Blvd. in Hickory.

Saturday
Coulters Grove AME Zion Church will host a car wash and cookout from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at its Startown Road location. Cost is a minimum $5 donation.
