Catawba County's week ahead

Classes this week will inform citizens who want to add members to their families and those who want to learn more about their ancestors.

Family Builders of Catawba Valley invites prospective foster and adoptive parents to a Tuesday information session, and the Catawba County Library System will begin a series of genealogy workshops Saturday.

Tuesday
Family Builders of Catawba Valley invites prospective foster and adoptive parents to a meeting from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Family Services Center at 3050 11th Ave. Drive SE in Hickory.

Saturday
The Catawba County Democratic Party will hold its annual county convention at the Old Catawba County Courthouse in downtown Newton.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m., with coffee and refreshments. The meeting will begin at 11 a.m.

The meeting will feature local and statewide candidates for office or their representatives. All registered Democrats are invited to attend.

Saturday
Catawba Valley Community College’s Seeds of Service Club will hold its annual "Run of the Mill" 5K Run/Walk at historic Murray's Mill in the town of Catawba. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.

Saturday
The 4th Brigade Best of the Best Drill Competition will be at the Hickory Metro and Convention Center throughout the day. Army JROTC drill teams from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia will compete.

Saturday
Catawba County Library System will begin a four-month series of free genealogy workshops on Saturday mornings, beginning Saturday in Newton.

All sessions will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Main Library. Pre-registration is not required.

April 16
Newton-Conover High School will host a meeting at 7 p.m. in the media center to gather input on the qualities the community would like to see the school's next football coach possess.

The school encourages those who can't attend to send their input to new athletic director and assistant principal Billy Leeson at billy_leeson@nccs.k12.nc.us.
