Catawba County's week ahead

The 2012 election season gets under way this week in Catawba County as filing begins Monday for a variety of seats.
For those who have already tuned out the year's political events, there's also a home show and several musical performances. One will benefit an area school's backpack program.
The Dinosaurs exhibit also continues at the Catawba Science Center in Hickory.

Sunday
The Catawba County Branch NAACP will hold its regular meeting at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Olin AME Zion Church on Smyre Farm Road in Newton.

Recent events at Fred T. Foard High School will be discussed.

Monday
Friends of Catawba County Library will discuss plans for 2012 during an 11 a.m. meeting at Main Library in Newton.

Monday
Tri-City Christian School in Conover will host an open house for its 5-year-old kindergarten program from 6-7:30 p.m. at the school.

Friday
The Hickory and Catawba Valley Home Builders Association will present a Design for Living Home Show, which begins Friday at Valley Hills Mall.

Friday and Saturday, the show will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Feb. 19 hours will be noon to 6 p.m.

The show is free to the public.

Saturday
Local rock-pop band 20/20 will perform at 9:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at The Hickory Tavern. There is no cost to attend.

Saturday
At 6 p.m., the Cockman Family will perform at the First United Methodist Church in Conover to raise money for the Conover School Backpack program.

The Cockman Family is from Sherrills Ford and are known throughout the nation for their bluegrass gospel music.

The evening is sponsored by the Methodist Men and features a meal and entertainment for $10.

Tickets are available at the Conover School office and must be purchased in advance.
