Case continued for triple-murder

March 18, 2011

The man accused of shooting three people to death in a Conover mobile home park was assigned a new court date Thursday — one day before he was slated for a first appearance in court.

Everette Hewitt, 32, of Claremont, had his case continued to April 6, according to the Catawba County Clerk of Court's Office. Hewitt is charged with murdering three people Tuesday when he allegedly walked into a Conover mobile home and started shooting.

It is unclear why Hewitt's court appearance was moved up one day, and the District Attorney's Office didn't return calls requesting an explanation about the change. As of Friday afternoon, the Catawba County Sheriff's Office listed Hewitt's court date as March 18.

Hewitt allegedly shot four people inside the trailer on Emmanuel Church Road in Conover about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. Three of those people were mortally wounded. The Catawba County Sheriff's Office identified the victims as Wade Sigmon, 49; Susan Kay Blevins, 51; and Connie Canipe Miller, 42, all of Conover.

Joseph Burke, 38, is the only one to survive the incident. Burke was shot in the back of his neck, and he called 9-1-1 to report the crime.

In a recording of Burke's call, released Thursday, Burke tells the 9-1-1 operator that an unknown man came into the residence and demanded Burke's ATM card.

Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said police think the four victims and Hewitt were doing drugs together early Tuesday morning, before the shootings occurred.

Hewitt allegedly fled the mobile home on Emmanuel Church Road after the shootings, prompting a 26-hour manhunt that involved more than 100 deputies from Catawba County and the surrounding area.

Police located Hewitt early Wednesday morning in Claremont at the home of Hewitt's girlfriend. He was taken into custody without incident.

Hewitt remains in Catawba County jail with no bond.
