A stray animal was the apparent cause of a car crash Thursday that sent one man to the hospital.
Newton Police said a man was driving west on East 20th Street in Newton about 9:10 a.m. The man, whose name wasn't immediately available, told police a stray animal ran in front of his Chevy S-10 pickup truck.
The man said he swerved to avoid hitting the animal, causing him to run off the right side of the road and crash into a Newton power pole.
The man complained of non-visible injuries at the scene, and he was transported to the hospital for precautionary measures, according to police. The man was wearing his seat belt when his truck struck the pole.
Newton electric officials said the crash caused about $1,500 in damage to the pole and other electrical equipment.
The driver's truck also sustained about $1,500 in damage to its right-front fender, but police said the vehicle wasn't totaled in the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Police said the man probably won't be cited in the incident, and alcohol or speed don't appear to be a factor in the crash.
