Car crashes into Newton storefront

November 26, 2010

A car crashed into a downtown Newton store's display window Wednesday, sending the driver to the hospital.
The driver was traveling on North College Avenue in front of the 1924 Courthouse when she crashed into an empty storefront shortly after noon.
The driver, an elderly woman, wasn't identified at the scene. Her Buick Park Avenue struck the glass display window and bent the window's metal frame, scattering glass several yards from where the car hit.
Newton Police Department, Newton Fire Department and the Newton-Conover Rescue Squad responded to the crash. Emergency workers helped the woman exit the vehicle, and they used a stretcher to carry her to a nearby ambulance. She was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center.
Newton Police officers on the scene said it is unknown what caused the woman to veer off the road and into the storefront. They will travel to the hospital to further investigate the crash.
Officers said it doesn't appear any other vehicles were involved in the incident.
