Candidates voice opinions

Newton-Conover Auditorium welcomed national, state and local candidates during Tuesday's Farm Bureau forum. While the candidates acknowledged their roots somewhere within the state, the common ground ended with Catawba County as they explained their platform.

Patsy Keever and Elisabeth Motsinger spoke during the forum. They were asked about their opinion on inheritance tax and its affect on family-owned farms as well as small businesses. Keever said one of her life experiences related to the tax was being apart of a family-owned small business and understanding how to meet payroll.

“We have to have a compromise,” Keever said. “There are small businesses and farms that have equipment that can easily be evaluated to more than the $1 million exemption, they could have $5 million worth.”
