Bucs start NJCAA tournament play today

May 12, 2011

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team
makes its second appearance in the NJCAA Region X
tournament on Friday. The Bucs face Patrick Henry
Community College in the first round.

For the second time in school history, the CVCC baseball team embarks on a quest to win the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region X tournament.

The Bucs (35-13) face Patrick Henry Community College today at 1 p.m. at O’Neal Field at Big Rock Stadium in Morehead City.

The winner of that game will take on the winner of Pasco-Hernando and Surry Community College on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Last year, the Bucs entered the tournament, which was played at Hooker Field in Martinsville, Va., as the No. 6 seed.

They lost a first round game against No. 3 L.B. Wallace Community College, 7-1, and exited the tournament with a 7-3 loss to College of the Albemarle.
The Bucs face a familiar opponent this year, fellow conference member Patrick Henry. CVCC won the season series, 2-1, and earned victories on March 19 with scores of 5-4 and 11-8.

The Patriots won the final game of the three-game series, 17-10.
The winner of the tournament will advance to the NJCAA Div. II World Series.

Friday schedule:

Game 1: Pasco-Hernando vs. Surry, 10 a.m.

Game 2: CVCC vs. Patrick Henry, 1 p.m.

Game 3: Lenoir vs. Southeastern, 4 p.m.

Game 4: Brunswick vs. Coll. of Albermarie, 7 p.m.
