Bucs nearly score 100 in victory
The CVCC women’s basketball team put on an impressive display Thursday against Milligan College at the Multi-Purpose Complex.
The Lady Bucs nearly broke the 100-point mark in a dominating 91-58 victory over the Lady Buffs.
Page Moore led CVCC with 18 points, while Olivia Sabo, Nicole Gentry and Brianna Mitchell added 14 points.
CVCC trailed early in the Thursday’s game because of a hot three-point shooting start by Milligan. The Lady Buffs hit four early treys, including two by Brooke White, to take a 19-12 advantage in the contest.
“Defensively in the first half, especially the first 12 minutes, we didn’t close out very good,” said CVCC coach Tommy Edwards. “We were losing our offensive player and not closing out.”
The Lady Bucs regained composure and eventually took the lead following back-to-back steals and lay ups by Brianna Mitchell. She finished the half with nine points.
“We put our quicker group in,” Edwards said. “We put some of our quicker guards in, and we started doing a better job defensively. They have some shooters. When we stood there, lost them and didn’t play good defense, they knocked the ball down pretty good.”
Despite early success behind the arc in the first five minutes of the contest, Milligan made only three long-range shots in the remainder of the half and six baskets overall.
Three-straight baskets toward the end of the half by Olivia Sabo extended the Lady Bucs, putting them halfway to the century mark at halftime.
Running out of stamina in the end of the game, but continued on cruise control for the impressive win.
“The latter part of the second half, the defense created steals,” Edwards said. “Milligan made some bad passes and turnovers, and we pushed the ball down the floor. That’s mainly how we built our lead. We pushed the ball down the floor, and they got tired.”
Despite the victory, Edwards said his team has some improvements to make.
“We shot the ball pretty well tonight,” Edwards said. “We scored 91 points, so I’m not disappointed in our offense. Defensively, we have a few things to work on. We have to not lose our man and close out on the ball. We’ve got to continue to get better.”
