BREAKING: Wreck on county line closes I-40

A single-car wreck Tuesday afternoon near the Catawba-Iredell county line closed Interstate 40 for approximately one hour.

The accident, involving a tan Cadillac, occurred heading westbound at mile marker 140.

Stephen Pate, 69, of Connelly Springs and Kernersville, drove the vehicle off the road, avoiding the guard rail, and collided with a tree.

Witnesses said that Pate was speeding at the time of the collision.

First responders, as well as a medical helicopter, arrived on the scene shortly after the accident.

Pate was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and is currently being treated for serious injuries.

Trooper Brett D. Mart said drug use was believed to be a factor in the crash. Pate was charged with driving while impaired, as well as careless and reckless driving.
