BREAKING: Truck driver dies in I-40 crash

A tractor-trailer driver died in a Thursday rear-end collision with another tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 near Claremont, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Highway patrol officials say traffic was backed up in a construction zone on I-40 East when a tractor-trailer failed to slow down and hit another tractor-trailer.

That tractor-trailer then collided with a passenger car, sending it off the interstate shoulder.

The wreck killed the driver of the tractor-trailer that failed to slow down, highway patrol officials said. The name of the victim, who was from Nebraska, has not yet been released.

The crash happened about 6:50 p.m. Thursday, 2.44 miles east of Claremont.

Traffic on eastbound I-40 backed up for at least five hours, said Trooper R.H. Lanier.

Thursday's crash was the second in recent months near the construction zone. In May, a state Department of Transportation truck caused an accident in the area, sending several people to the hospital.
