When running back Zac Pollard went down with a knee injury during last week's 28-0 win against West Caldwell, no one knew the extent of the damage.

The Spartans found out the disappointing results on Wednesday.

Following an MRI on Tuesday, Pollard was discovered to have a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Pollard dominated the prep football scene in 2012 as a junior, rushing for 3,073 yards and 36 touchdowns.

That effort led South Caldwell to a 12-1 overall record, including a Northwestern 3A/4A title with a perfect 6-0 conference mark.

The Spartans also made it to the second round of the 3A playoffs before falling to Sun Valley.

Pollard's injury is the second major one in as many weeks for key position players among Northwestern 3A/4A schools.

Fred T. Foard junior quarterback Matt Williams broke the tibia/shin bone in two places in his left leg during the Tigers' 48-20 season-opening loss at home against Maiden.

South Caldwell has three Catawba County opponents remaining on its schedule, including hosting Maiden on Sept. 20.

The Spartans play three county football teams in conference play, starting with Hickory on Oct. 11. South Caldwell also plays St. Stephens on Oct. 25 and Fred T. Foard on Nov. 1.
