With 180 days until it kicks of its 11th annual event, the Greater Hickory Classic golf tournament announced some major sponsorship news on Tuesday.
Kia Motors, which has presented the Champions Tour golf tournament since 2006, has increase its sponsorship for the event this October. The tournament announced the move during a press conference Tuesday morning at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover.
The Champions Tour event will now be known as the Greater Hickory Kia Classic. It takes place Oct. 14-20, 2013.
The last and only other time the Greater Hickory Classic had a name change was back in 2010 when the event was called the Ensure Classic.
The PGA Tour announced on Dec. 12, 2012 that Rock Barn Golf & Spa would host an 11th straight Champions Tour golf tournament.
The tournament has produced eight winners during its 10-year history, including Craig Stadler (2003); Doug Tewell (2004); Jay Haas (2005 & 2009); Andy Bean (2006); R.W. Eaks (2007 & 2008); Gary Hallberg (2010); Mark Wiebe (2011); Fred Funk (2012).
Funk, who shot 15-under-par this past October, defeated Duffy Waldorf by one stroke at last year's GHC.
