BREAKING: Hickory coach indicted for sex with student

July 24, 2012

Hickory High School's boys basketball coach has been indicted on four counts of statutory rape and having sex with a student.

Hickory Police Department and District 25 Attorney James C. Gaither Jr. announced at mid-day Tuesday that Shawnacie Antoine Johnson, of Conover, has been indicted for felony sex offense with a student. The 38-year-old has also been charged with four felony counts of statutory rape of a 13-, 14-, or 15-year-old.

Officials with Hickory Public Schools say Johnson has been placed on administrative leave with pay as the investigation continues.

Johnson was hired by HPS in 2002 and worked last year as head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He led the Hickory boys basketball team to the 3A state finals last year, after the team won its fifth-straight regular season conference title.
