A father and son were shot Sunday night after an argument escalated during a card game in Vale.
Authorities say a group of men were playing cards and drinking about 8 p.m. Sunday near the 7000 block of N.C. 10 West in Vale when an argument over a woman escalated and two of the men were shot.
Paul David Tallent, 49, and Dustin Dwayne Tallent, 27, both sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot once each by a revolver at their residence at 7429 N.C. 10 West in Vale, said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.
Paul David Tallent remains in Frye Regional Medical Center. His son, Dustin, has been released.
Reid said a group of people were at the Tallents' residence Sunday evening for the card game, including Toby Dwight Smith, 42, also of Vale.
After playing cards a while, Smith, Paul David, and Dustin got into an argument over a woman, Smith’s girlfriend, Reid said. The three men, who had all been drinking, then started fighting.
After the fight, Smith went back to his house at 3167 Ledford Road, got a revolver and returned to the Tallents' residence, Reid said.
He then threatened both Paul David and Dustin with the gun and shot both once. Paul David was struck in the stomach, while Dustin was hit in the hip, Reid said.
Police were called to the Tallents' residence and Smith was arrested. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder and is in Catawba County Jail on a combined $1 million secured bond, $500,000 for each count.
He is scheduled to make his first court appearance today.
