A man who allegedly robbed the Peoples Bank on First Street West in Conover wasn't trying to hide himself as he requested money from a bank teller.
The suspected robber entered the bank at 9:22 a.m. Tuesday wearing a bright green reflective vest, a dark-colored baseball cap, light-colored pants and a dark long-sleeve shirt. He walked up to a teller, gave her a note and in return, the teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money. The man didn't present a weapon to the teller and no one was injured.
Conover Police Chief Steve Brewer said the suspect took the note with him when he left the bank. He supposedly ran through the parking lot, crossed First Street West and is suspected to have left the scene in a vehicle parked behind the Sunshine Mart at the corner of Third Avenue NW and First Street West.
A Catawba County K-9 unit was unable to locate the man's scent from the Sunshine Mart.
Logan Kale, of Newton, said he was in the bank parking lot and about to enter the bank when the suspect ran from Peoples Bank.
"I may not have seen him running, but I saw a big yellow blob running by," Kale said, adding the suspect ran behind his truck, which was parked facing First Street West in the bank's parking lot.
Brewer said the man could've had the reflective vest because he's an employee for a company who might distribute such vests, but it's not known at this time.
"The man could've worn the vest to distract attention from his facial features," Brewer said. "I'm not saying it was the case, but it's a possibility."
The suspect is described as a white male, a thin build and 6'2 to 6'3 in height.
Law enforcement is investigating the incident and interviewing employees who were inside the bank at the time of the robbery for more information to lead to an arrest. The bank was closed to customers Tuesday following the incident.
