Breaking Away From The Pack

October 14, 2010

Thousands of runners from around western North Carolina hit the gravel Wednesday for the annual United Way Invitational. They ran the 5K course around Southside Park in Newton, which includes three laps around the path behind the National Guard Armory.

Asheville Roberson was the big winner in the event this year sweeping the boys and girls awards. Cole Rains, a junior at Roberson, won the boys race in 15 minutes 51.91 seconds for his first-career win, and Brooke Gordon, a sophomore, ran the race in 17:55.63.

Roberson also won the team awards for both genders. The boys team defeated East Rowan by 39 points to get the win, and the girls beat North Lincoln by 53 points.

St. Stephens’ Mat Zachrich was the top boys runner in the county for the second straight week. Zachrich won the Catawba County Championship last week at Murray’s Mill, and he was the only runner from the county Thursday to finish in the top 10 at the United Way Invitational. He ran the race in 16:13.73.

The Indians’ boys team, however, finished 27th in the overall team standings. Bunker Hill finished 14th in the team competition with 430 points.

The Hickory girls team took top honors in the county. The Red Tornadoes finished fifth with 235 points, and Fred T. Foard finished sixth with 253.

Cross country action returns to Southside Park on Monday for the Catawba Valley 2-A conference championship.
