Body found in burned car

June 7, 2012

Catawba County authorities launched a homicide investigation after discovering a dead body inside a burning car Thursday in rural Sherrills Ford.

Sheriff Coy Reid said investigators are searching for leads in a situation where he thinks foul play was involved.

Sheriff’s deputies first discovered the body about 9:30 a.m. Thursday after a local landowner stumbled upon a smoldering vehicle on a backwoods path off Hopewell Church Road.

The body, which has yet to be identified, will be removed from the vehicle and sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy, Reid said.

“We do believe we know who it is,” Reid said, adding that the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released the deceased person's name.
