Blue Devils drop second CVAC match

September 8, 2011

Despite early leads in the first and second games, Maiden lost a tough home conference volleyball match Wednesday to East Burke, 25-27, 25-27, 25-18, 19-25.

“We played well, but we made mistakes,” said Maiden coach Marsha Davis.

Leading the Lady Blue Devils (4-3, 3-2) was McKenzie Garrison, who had 23 kills and three digs. Alex Williams added 15 kills.

Maiden’s Hannah Martin and Kalie Johnson combined for 45 assists, while Rachel Houston had six blocks defensively.

The Blue Devils battled the Lady Cavaliers (7-3, 3-2) in the first two games of the match, but fell both times, 27-25.

After bouncing back and winning the third game, 25-18, communication issues plagued Maiden, which got them behind 12-6 early in the fourth game.

Needing 10 points to tie the match late in game four, the Lady Blue Devils won five straight points, but eventually lost a point to drop the game, 25-19, and match.

Maiden travels to Bandys for a pivotal CVAC match Thursday.

“It’s going to be a hard match for us, but we’ve got to eliminate our own mistakes,” Davis said. “We can’t have missed serves. We’ve got to make sure our passes are where they need to be. We just have to play a good game.”
