Newton-Conover wrestling improved to 5-0 this season with a 66-9 victory Monday against Concord. "I'm pleased with tonight," head coach Eddy Clark said. "It's always nice to beat a 3A team."
He added the big question heading into last night's match was if the wrestler could maintain their weight from the weekend tournament at Charlotte Ardrey Kell. The Red Devils had 11 wrestlers reach the semifinals, in their respective weight classes, of the Ardrey Kell tournament and six wrestlers reach the finals. Newton-Conover's Charlie Avis, Ethan Carter, Michael Self and Andrew Tremain won individual championships. "Overall, I felt good about Saturday," Clark said. |

Fighters from Combat College in Hickory swept the competition Oct. 24 at the Circle of Fury mixed martial arts event in Winston-Salem. Brian Whitaker and Travis Cook both won their fights less than one minute into the first round. Whitaker and Cook fight again Saturday in Mooresville. Mixed martial arts is a mixture of different forms of hand-to-hand combat, and it is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and around the world. |

Newton-Conover announced on Thursday that it has hired Mark Carter to be its new head boys basketball coach, effective immediately. Carter takes over for David Rutledge, who left earlier this month to take the open job at his alma mater, South Iredell. |

Another week of high school football has passed us by, and tonight will be the fifth playing date in a season that seems like it started yesterday. This year will be the last year that all seven teams from Catawba County will be in the same conference, that is, until another statewide realignment comes along and changes everything again. And while no one can seem to find gas for their vehicles, for those of you who have some of the now-precious commodity, there are plenty of games tonight around town that will have you on the edge of your seat. But you don't have to take my word for it. |

When you can build a three-goal lead before halftime, it makes the second half much easier. St. Stephens did just that, and held Newton-Conover scoreless in the first half en route to a 4-1 boys' soccer win Monday at Gurley Stadium. |
