Written by From O-N-E reports
Thursday, 25 September 2008

Newton-Conover announced on Thursday that it has hired Mark Carter to be its new head boys basketball coach, effective immediately.

Carter takes over for David Rutledge, who left earlier this month to take the open job at his alma mater, South Iredell.

A different approach: Power has shifted, in CVAC and O-N-E picks PDF Print E-mail

Thursday, 25 September 2008

Another week of high school football has passed us by, and tonight will be the fifth playing date in a season that seems like it started yesterday.

This year will be the last year that all seven teams from Catawba County will be in the same conference, that is, until another statewide realignment comes along and changes everything again. And while no one can seem to find gas for their vehicles, for those of you who have some of the now-precious commodity, there are plenty of games tonight around town that will have you on the edge of your seat.

But you don't have to take my word for it.

Indians use 3-goal first half to top Newton-Conover PDF Print E-mail

When you can build a three-goal lead before halftime, it makes the second half much easier.

St. Stephens did just that, and held Newton-Conover scoreless in the first half en route to a 4-1 boys' soccer win Monday at Gurley Stadium.

Tuesday Morning QB: Friday night was one to remember PDF Print E-mail
Written by RYAN HERMAN (O-N-E sports editor)
Monday, 22 September 2008

A lot of things happened on Friday night.

Fred T. Foard won big over Patton for its first 4-0 start since 1981. St. Stephens held on against Hickory for the first time since 1993. In a game that's usually close, Newton-Conover topped Maiden 36-7. And those Bears from Bunker Hill finally picked up a win after 22 straight losses.

In what has already become a historic prep football season in Catawba County, the final year that all seven teams will be in the same league has yet to disappoint. If someone would have predicted the three teams that are currently tied for the lead in the Catawba Valley Athletic 2A-3A Conference — Fred T. Foard, Hibriten and Newton-Conover — most people would have probably laughed at them.

Red Devils rout Blue Devils PDF Print E-mail
Written by MICHAEL WILLARD (O-N-E publisher)
Saturday, 20 September 2008

A close first half contest turned lopsided after intermission as second-half turnovers helped Newton-Conover roll to a 36-7 victory over Maiden on Friday.

“Our kids woke up in the second half. It is the same thing we have been dealing with all year — the first-half blahs. I don’t know why we would have that against Maiden,” Newton-Conover head coach Nick Bazzle said. “Maiden had a lot to do with that. They always play us at a higher level than they do anybody else, and we just ran into a good football team in the first half.”

After Newton-Conover’s Dorian Jones gave the home team a 7-0 halftime lead, a new Red Devils bunch marched onto the field to start the third quarter. Newton-Conover posted 29 second-half points to maintain a perfect 4-0 record.
