The Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils lost the battle of the boards Saturday against the Salisbury Lady Hornets. And they also lost the 2A West region championship. Newton-Conover finished its game against Salisbury with 21 total rebounds – three less than Salisbury’s amount of offensive rebounds. “Their size with the rebounding hurt us,” said Jonathan Tharpe, Newton-Conover head coach. “I think we are as quick as they are, we are just not as big as they are.”

For the second time this school year, a team from Newton-Conover needs to beat a team from Salisbury to advance to a state championship. The Red Devils football team earned a win Dec. 5 and reached a state final. Now, it’s the turn for the Lady Red Devils basketball team.
Salisbury has a long winning streak. The Lady Hornets won their last 33 games, including a win in the state 2A championship, stretching back to last year. That, however, does not phase the Lady Red Devils. “There is no fear. I just have no fear,” senior Renee Lewis said. “I don’t think our team has any fear. We have a long winning streak too, and everyone is beatable.”

Paxton Tallent took over in November as the program director at the Shuford YMCA, and he has ideas about some changes at the facility. “I want to offer the best prgrams around,” Tallent said. “That’s just my nature I guess. I know it’s not always possible, but that’s where I want to be.” The new program director wants to get the community involved more and wants the family program to involve every one from a family. One of his ideas is a big egg hunt around Easter or a father-son basketball tournament.

He hasn’t though. Littlefield has Tourette’s syndrome and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He is the manager for both men’s basketball teams at Maiden.

Jon Holloway, a junior wrestler at St. Stephens, is making his debut Friday at the state tournament. It’s something he almost didn’t get the opportunity to make.
“At the beginning of the year, honestly, I didn’t know if I was going to even wrestle,” he said. “I just hated practice and hated stuff like that. I didn’t think it was ever going to work out, and I didn’t think I was going to be any good.” St. Stephens coach Billy Baker and a few of Holloway’s teammates convinced the 160-pound wrestler to stay with the team.
