The Mooresville Blue Devils might want to think about relocating to Catawba County.
The current Catawba County Easter Baseball Classic title holders got four runs in the first inning Friday, including a three-run homer, and went on to defeat host Fred T. Foard 6-4 in the first round of the state 3A West baseball playoffs.
The Blue Devils (19-5) will host West Rowan, a 2-1 winner over Marvin Ridge, in the second round on Tuesday. |

LENOIR — Something happened to Bandys this week the team had been searching for all season — all the pieces finally came together. And senior Olivia Huffman finally learned how to squash a bumblebee. Huffman had a key two-run single in the fourth, and Carlee Carpenter pitched a complete-game with six strikeouts Thursday as the Trojans topped host Hibriten 5-2 en route to their second straight Catawba Valley Athletic Conference softball tournament championship. "It finally came into our heads that we could do it, that we were good enough," Huffman said. While that goal is still a possibility, with the Red Devils advancing to Tuesday's second round, there's one goal that has been kept a secret until now — they want to be movie stars. Mark off Round 1 of the state 2A dual-team playoffs as an obstacle standing in the Red Devils' way. The home team soundly defeated West Henderson 9-0, and flexed its muscles well enough that a return trip to Burlington doesn't seem too out of the question. With each point, set and match coming rather easily Tuesday, head coach Brian Tate said the thing that worries him most this time of year is a repeat of 2006. |

When Bandys gets rolling, it makes you pay — and that’s what it wants to do. The Trojans used hard hitting and aggressive baserunning to force Maiden into eight errors Monday, and scored a run in their final three frames to take a 5-3 win in the first round of the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference softball tournament.
Fifth-seeded Bandys will face No. 1 Fred T. Foard, an 11-0 winner over No. 8 Patton, today at 4 p.m. in the semifinals at Hibriten. |
