NEWTON-CONOVER 44, ALEXANDER CENTRAL 33
Newton-Conover advances to the championship game of the Catawba Valley Classic with a 44-33 victory over Alexander Central. The Lady Red Devils will face Hickory for the tournament championship.

Lanecia Williams led Newton-Conover with 22 points, and Taylor Petty added nine. Dasia Tipps score six, Kadeshia Gibbs scored three and Shynese Whitener and Cayla Miller each scored two.

Marah Cockrell and Madi Suddreth each scored seven to lead the Lady Cougars. Kelsie Rhyne and Marie Ritchie each added six points. Brooke Sharpe scored five and Taylor Wike added two in Alexander Central's losing effort.

The Lady Cougars will play South Caldwell in the third place game Thursday.

At the end of the first quarter, Newton-Conover takes a 17-8 lead over Alexander Central.

Newton-Conover leads 25-17 over Alexander Central at halftime. Lanecia Williams leads Newton-Conover with 14 first-half points, while Dasia Tipps added four and Taylor Petty scored three.

Marie Ritchie scored six to lead Alexander Central and Kelsie Rhyne added four for the Lady Cougars.

Newton-Conover leads Alexander Central after the third quarter, 37-22.

Newton-Conover wins 44-33 over Alexander Central to advance to the C-V Championship game against Hickory.

EARLY GAMES:

HICKORY 71, SOUTH CALDWELL 37
After a close first quarter, Hickory used pressure defense to strangle South Caldwell and win, 71-37.

Aja Hoyle led Hickory with 15 and Danasha Witherspoon scored 11. Farrah Young scored 10 for the Lady Tornadoes Andrea Miller and Yazmin Hannah each scored 8.

South Caldwell's Anna Lee Bollinger scored 14, and Leah Sherrill added nine. Shaina Sams scored 7.

At the end of the third quarter, Hickory leads South Caldwell, 54-28.

FRED T. FOARD 57, ST. STEPHENS 35
Fred T. Foard advanced in the girls consolation bracket of the Catawba Valley Classic with a 57-35 win over 3A rival St. Stephens.

Brooke Robinson led the Lady Tigers with 14 points, while Chelsea Turner scored 12 and Chelsea Hoyle added 10. Hope Danner and Hannah Skeen each scored five and Courtney Hull scored three. Kaitlin Sigmon scored two. Foard struggled at the free throw line, making 12-of-25.

Morgan Bibey scored eight to lead St. Stephens and Briana Thornburg scored six. Virginia McMahan scored five, and Victoria Lavelle and Darian Fischer each scored four. Kayona Hicks and Alana Starned scored three. Claire Menard scored two.

Fred T. Foard v. St. Stephens under way, with 1:02 left in the opening quarter, SSHS leads 10-8, but Lady Indians in foul trouble early. Quarter ends with St. Stephens leading 10-8, and Foard in the bonus.

St. Stephens survives early foul trouble, enters halftime with 23-17 lead over fred T. Foard. Morgan Bibey leads the Lady Indians with eight points, and Virginia McMahan has scored five. Chelsea Hoyle has scored six to lead the Lady Tigers and Hope Danner has scored five.

St. Stephens enters the second half with two players collecting three fouls each.

Foard's Brooke Robinson's free throw ties the game 28-28 with St. Stephens with 3:34 remaining in the third quarter. Turnovers and fouls continue to impact St. Stephens and the Lady Tigers take a 31-28 lead with 3:13 in the third quarter. So far Foard has missed 11 free throws.

Foard extends lead to 10, 38-28 at the end of third quarter. Lady Tigers collecting turnovers throughout second half. Foard outscored St. Stephens 21-5 in the third quarter.

Foard scores the 57-35 win over St. Stephens.

MAIDEN 56, BUNKER HILL 43
Maiden defeats Bunker Hill 56-43 in the consolation bracket of girls Catawba Valley Classic.

Sabrien Gaither led the Lady Blue Devils with 19 points, while Taylor Coulter added 14, including four three-pointers. Christina Helms scored 11, Rachel Pritchard scored six. Morgan Koch, Katie Foster and Makenzie Eller each scored two.

For Bunker Hill Wilbelis Rojas scored 12, while Brooke Blevins added 11. Courtney Adsit scored 10. Montana Lineberger scored four. Anna Williams and Hannah Huffman each scored two, and Kayla Benfield and Jachelle Turner each scored one.

Maiden leads 21-16 after the first quarter. Maiden's Taylor Coulter scored a pair of three-pointers, while Bunker Hill's Brooke Blevins hit back-toback three-pointers to tie the game at 14-14 in the opening quarter's midway point.

Maiden's pressure defense helped the Lady Blue Devils build a lead before the quarter break.

Game stoppage at the 4:35 mark of the first quarter, as Maiden Morgan Kuch is down with injury. Maiden 25, Bunker Hill 18. Kuch helped from the floor, favoring her left leg.

Maiden pulling away, leading 36-18 with 1:15 left in the opening half.

At halftime, Maiden's girls lead 36-21 over Bunker Hill. Leading the Lade Blue Devils, Christina Helms has scored 11, Sabrina Gaither has scored nine, and Taylor Coulter has added eight. Wilbelis Rojas has scored nine to lead Bunker Hill. Brooke Blevins has added a pair of three-pointers and Courtney Adsit, Montana Lineberger and Hannah Huffman have each scored two.

After three quarters Maiden leads Bunker Hill 47-31. Maiden's pressure defense collecting Bunker Hill turnovers, converting them to points.

Bunker Hill's Courtney Adsit hits a pair of three-pointers to narrow the Maiden lead to 12 at the start of the fourth quarter.

PREGAME:

Day two of the Catawba Valley Classic kicks off this afternoon at Catawba Valley Community College and Hickory High School.

Basketball action begins at CVCC’s Tarlton Complex at 4 p.m. when No. 5 Maiden plays No. 8 Bunker Hill in the girls consolation bracket. After the conclusion of the day’s opener, No. 6 Fred T. Foard plays No. 7 St. Stephens.

In the girls championship bracket, No. 1 Hickory is scheduled to tip off against No. 4 South Caldwell at 7 p.m. Girls games conclude tonight with No. 3 Newton-Conover battling No. 2 Alexander Central, with game time set for about 9 p.m.

Boys games are played tonight at Hickory High School, and the first game between No. 2 Fred T. Foard and No. 6 Maiden is set to tip of consolation play at 4:30 p.m. Also in the boys consolation bracket No. 4 Newton-Conover faces No. 8 Bunker Hill.

In the boys championship bracket No. 3 Alexander Central plays No. 7 South Caldwell with tip off set for 7:30 p.m. The final game of the night is set to begin about 9 p.m., featuring No. 1 Hickory and No. 5 St. Stephens.

Passes for each venue cost $6, and a complete tournament ticket is $15.
