In a matter of less than four months, the Broyhill site will be a clean slate for city planners and developers to transform into a vision of the future. On Monday night, the Conover City Council approved a contract for the demolition of the site with the exception of the Warlong Glove Manufacturing Co. building. “I think it’s exciting to see our vision take shape,” said Councilman Lee Moritz. |

Eager to beat long lines on Election Day, Catawba County registered voters are showing up at the polls by the dozens. Only 10 days into early voting, with the main event a week away, and early voters have already topped the total number of early voters in the 2006 general election. “It’s starting early in the morning and (busy) until closing time. It’s been constant,” Larry Brewer, director of the Catawba County Board of Elections said about crowds at the early voting locations. He said 20,000 people voted early during the two weeks prior to the 2006 general election. This year, 24,228 county residents had already cast their ballots by 2:30 p.m. Monday. Brewer said he has no doubts that his prediction of 30,000 early voters will either be met or exceeded by Saturday, which is the last day people can vote early. |
