Patti Corley had just taken the newspapers out of the box by the road on Wednesday when she noticed smoke billowing from beneath the driver’s seat of her SUV.

“It just burst into flames,” she said.

She yelled at people doing yard work nearby for help as she dialed 911 from the driveway of the home, located at 4084 N.C. 10 near Balls Creek Road.  She was only a few feet away from the flames when a passer-by stopped at the sight of the flames and suggested she move to the top of the long driveway away from the fire.

Wind gusts whipped through Catawba County on Tuesday, but many people found themselves unprotected from the cold.

As soon as the weather turns chilly, Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry gets flooded with requests for assistance with rent, utility bills, fuel and food.  Executive Director the Rev. Tony Bunton said October through February is the busiest time of year.  The ministry strives to help as many as they can, but this year, assistance is limited by the amount of need in the community.

“The demand on our food pantry, the need for energy and utility assistance, it’s unbelievable,” said Bunton.
